The goals of this unit are to increase cross-cultural understanding, build awareness and empathy for the lived experiences of others, identify and correct erroneous beliefs and misconceptions about our differences, and increase our empathy and connection with one another. Ideally, this lesson will motivate students and teachers to launch and sustain their own personal journey to better understand the inequities that exist in our world, and to choose to be a catalyst for diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. The reality is that we are all part of one race—the human race. Extensive research behind our shared DNA has been reported by the Human Genome Project, yet discussion about the concept of race, especially when defined primarily by skin color, and driven by stereotypes, can become exclusionary and divisive.
